A young man steals a boat to find his brother, but he and his shipmates become shipwrecked on a mysterious island inhabited by a giant sea monster and a slumbering Godzilla. Some teenagers want to obtain a boat to find a brother. When they look around a boat without permission, they find a thief who takes them on his escape. They are caught in a storm and arrive at Letchi Island where natives of Infant Island have been enslaved by the terrorist organisation Red Bamboo. Red Bamboo runs a heavy water factory to process a juice which holds off the monster, Ebirah, which otherwise traps them on the island. The young men meet beautiful but tough Daiyo and wake up Godzilla to put an end to the Red Bamboo. A stealing of a boat leads to a rescue mission that ends up on the island of the red bamboo. The Red Bamboo are a militant group intent on taking over the planet. All attempted escapes from the island are halted by the giant lobster monster Ebirah. Soon the group of people who stole the boat come upon Godzilla in a cave and awaken him by using lightning. The group now must rescue their comrades who were captured by the red bamboo all while watching out for Godzilla.<br/><br/>This is one of Godzillas least remembered films. It is not regarded as his best film but is not among the list of the worst regarded Godzilla Films. THat is the opinion I have on it, it is a good Godzilla Film, not his best, but certainly not his worst.<br/><br/>There are a couple behavioral oddities for Godzilla in this film. That can be attributed to the fact that this film was originally written to star King Kong. That explains a scene where Godzilla is smitten with an island girl and several scenes where he chooses to throw builders rather than use his atomic breath.<br/><br/>There is plenty of action in this film. This includes several scenes including the humans who are trying to flee from the evil red bamboo. Godzilla himself gets in a lot of action. This includes two interesting fights with Ebirah, the Sea Monster.<br/><br/>Ebirah is just an enormous lobster. He possesses no super powers or anything, just uses his giant claws to smash things. He gets some good hits on Godzilla but for the most part when Godzilla rips off both of Ebirahs claws the threat is over.<br/><br/>Godzilla also gets to fight a giant condor. Mothra is in the film in a cameo role and fights Godzilla briefly. I never liked Mothra so his involvement in the film did not make me too happy.<br/><br/>So this film does have plenty of action involving both Godzilla and the humans. Not one of the best Godzilla films, but there are others waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse. Watch it whenever you have a chance. I've watched "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" twice today- once with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 crew ripping it apart in a veru good but not great episode (the only great bit being the 'Godzilla bop' skit, one of the best skits in the show's early years), and the second time in all its unedited, pure horror. While there's no denying there's a lot of crap bits in even the better Godzilla films, there's no excuse for this gigantic mess known as "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster". It's terrible, simple as.<br/><br/>Providing absolutely nothing of interest in the entirety of its running time, "Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster" is one of those films where you wonder why they bothered. Of course, with this particular effort the answer is 'money' but you really do wonder if they couldn't have come up with a slightly more enjoyable plot, slightly better characters, and a decent way to get the (poorly-realized) monsters together. Moreover, the once-interesting Mothra-summoning scenes drag on and on and on and on…<br/><br/>It's boring. There's just nothing else to say about it, and there's maybe about 10 minutes of it that are actually interesting and worth watching. Settle for the MST3k version, it's got good riffs and Crow finally says what all of us have been thinking about the two twin girls, at least in close-up.<br/><br/>Boring, boring, boring. Poorly-paced, poorly-made, and with truly embarrassing special effects, "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" is a disaster.<br/><br/>2/10
