Chloe King should be dead. Any normal human being would be under the circumstances, but Chloe has just turned sixteen and has found out she isn't as normal as she once thought she was. Chloe is Mai - a race of beings with cat-like powers: speed, agility, and claws. Being a high school student was complicated enough, but being Mai has added a new set of problems. Chloe is given the responsibility of protecting both the Mai and Human races. A secret organization wants to have her assassinated - nine times if necessary. And a simple kiss has deadly consequences; so much for falling in love.

It seems like for the summer months there is very little to watch. That's why I'm really happy about ABC's lineup for this summer. The Nine Lives of Chloe King is airing on ABC Family on Tuesday nights after Pretty Little Liars. I watched the first episode of The Nine Lives of Chloe King after the summer premier of PLL. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The show starts a day before Chloe's 16th birthday. She has always been shy and it's implied that she doesn't have a lot of friends. Her personality seems to be changing and guys are flocking to her. She starts realizing that she has powers that give her cat like abilities including the power to change her nails into sharp claws. When assassins come after her she finds out that she is part of a greater race and that she is going to be the one to save her race. She has nine lives to lose. Will she be able to accept this new found power or will she try to run away from it all? Over all I like the characters and the acting. The story line seems like it will be a good one. I will be watching the rest of the series. The only thing I can criticize is The character development is a little dry and it seems like they put a little too much info in the first episode.
In short, the show is about average teenage girl Chloe King who finds out that she has the powers and abilities of a cat. Sounds okay, right? Well, call me critical, but I base the show on the pilot, which is crucial to drawing in viewers. My point being, too much happened.<br/><br/>It starts out rather cliché, with Chloe being pushed off a tower and seemingly dying, then the screen switches to a few days earlier. Chloe has about ten minutes of normal life (excluding having perfect aim, getting mugged and discovering retractable claws), when she is stalked by some assassin (didn&#39;t catch the name) who has been sent to kill Chloe. The problem is, she has nine lives. Now, I&#39;m not taking sides, but wouldn&#39;t it make so much more sense if the dude kidnapped Chloe and shot her nine times? You know, instead of throwing her off buildings and making a huge scene.<br/><br/>Then there&#39;s this whole thing about a Uniter (?) who is supposed to protect other cat people who are called Mai (the line &#39;not entirely god, not entirely human&#39; made me cringe). And Chloe is just way too accepting of her powers. She has claws and can suddenly do back flips over buildings and she&#39;s like &#39;yeah, whatever&#39;. Then she goes to save someone and casually shows her claws and I was so confused as to what was going on.<br/><br/>Two more Mai go to protect Chloe only to find out about the whole Uniter business, and in short: everyone goes home happy. Although this one guy who Chloe kissed ended up dying and the villain is never happy so yeah.<br/><br/>My point being, it just seemed like the producers were trying to cram several episodes worth of entertainment into half an hour. There wasn&#39;t much explanation as to what was going on and I didn&#39;t follow it at all. More of Chloe&#39;s back story and personal life should have been revealed before her Mai life being discovered.<br/><br/>Don&#39;t get me wrong, it wasn&#39;t a terrible show, just very rushed, like they didn&#39;t want to wait to get into the story. I very much doubt I will ever watch it again, and the whole thing seemed like a Catwoman meets Heroes spin off.<br/><br/>On the plus side, even though the idea has been done to death, it was fairly well done and the casting was okay, but Skyler Samuels as the lead role didn&#39;t quite do it for me. She&#39;s a good actress, but her methods were a little annoying.<br/><br/>I&#39;m sure not many people will agree with me and I can understand why. This is a love it or hate it show and unfortunately, I can&#39;t say I like it. If I ever end up watching another episode it may get better and hook me in, but for now I don&#39;t see that happening.<br/><br/>So, if you like Catwoman and teenage dramas, then go for it. If you like more original ideas and a thicker and more gripping plot, then steer clear of this one.
