Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.
The Good: Great cinematography, fine acting from the two leads, excellent battle scenes, and wonderfully overly-dramatic dialogue. Also; it is cartoonishly violent.<br/><br/>The Bad: Not much character development for anyone save the two leads and two or three secondary characters. The bits with the narration tend to go on overlong (show, don&#39;t tell; you&#39;re a movie, remember?). Also; it is cartoonishly violent (some people probably don&#39;t like this, even though I&#39;m not one of them).<br/><br/>The Standout: Eva Green. Her character takes the cake, and pretty much makes the whole film. Her character arc is well realized, and her deviation from the norm in most situations almost always caught me off- guard. There were several scenes which began as cliché as one can get, and then Eva&#39;s characterization (and the writing, can&#39;t forget to credit that) take things in a whole other direction than I was expecting. It&#39;s refreshing to see a strong female character who isn&#39;t just a clone of a traditionally male trope but with boobs.<br/><br/>All in all, highly recommended if high-violence hack &amp; slash movies are your bag.
Well i just finished watching this and i was very disappointed. There is way to much CGI and slow motion, as well as too much of the black and white backgrounds with slight colour in the actors outfits. It is nowhere near as good as the first one. The acting is pretty poor and the story line is back and forth to much. Less CGI would have made this movie so much better. also to much steroid bare chested blokes running around chopping off heads etc in slow motion. The lead female was probably the best actor in the whole movie. I am giving it a 2/10 and the first one a 6/10. The action on the Aegean sea was too dark to properly see the actors faces and movements. More colour and less black and white would have improved this movie considerably.
While very much a “hard R” movie, Rise of an Empire is, nevertheless, the perfect sort of film for rainy weekend afternoons. It’s a spectacle right down to its shattered ships and duplicitous warcraft, and this time out the story’s been leavened and enlivened with plenty of old-school girl power.
Events which occur before include the Battle of Marathon and Xerxes becoming the God-King.
